The Leakage Conference 2024, held at the Technische Universität Dresden from March 19 to March 22, emerged as a vibrant gathering of scholars, artists, activists, and practitioners committed to exploring the complexities of leaks across various domains. Hosted by stsing e.V., the event brought together over 500 participants from diverse backgrounds, marking a significant milestone in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS).

With the overarching theme of „Leakage,“ the conference provided a platform for nuanced discussions on environmental, social, political, and technological dimensions of leaks. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, artistic performances, and interactive sessions, attendees engaged in thoughtful dialogue and collaborative inquiry.

Keynote speakers Nerea Calvillo of the University of Warwick, Amade M’charek of the University of Amsterdam, and Thao Phan of Monash University delivered compelling presentations that sparked critical reflection and dialogue. Their insights into the intricacies of leaks, from aeropolis dynamics to percolating presence and misrecognition, set the tone for the inclusive and engaging atmosphere that permeated the conference.

In collaboration with the Technische Sammlungen Dresden, the conference presented „LEAKY EARTH: Multi-Mediations of a Planet in Transformation,“ an immersive artistic endeavor led by Rosa Barba, Kat Austen, and Dongjoo Seo. This interdisciplinary performance combined visual elements with critical inquiry, inviting attendees to explore the interconnectedness of environmental phenomena and human experience.

Accessibility and inclusivity were core values of the conference, with organizers prioritizing measures to ensure the participation of all attendees. Wheelchair-accessible venues, inclusive restroom facilities, and automatic captioning for presentations were just some of the initiatives implemented. A dedicated quiet space provided attendees with a sanctuary for reflection and rejuvenation, while the presence of the Awareness Team offered support and assistance to those in need.

Guided by principles of respectful communication and non-violence, participants engaged in fruitful discussions while upholding a commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. The conference organizers reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination and harassment, reaffirming their dedication to promoting a culture of mutual respect and understanding.

As the Leakage Conference 2024 concluded, its impact resonated far beyond the confines of the venue, underscoring the importance of collaborative inquiry and inclusive scholarship in addressing complex socio-technical issues. As stsing e.V. continues its mission to advance STS research and practice, the spirit of collaboration and engagement fostered at the conference promises to inspire future endeavors in the field.
