The best part of working at our inter- and transdisciplinary research center is the opportunity to meet new, inspiring people who drive innovation and foster collaborative ideas. Last week, our directors Orit Halpern and Jens Krzywinski had the privilege of meeting Alexandra Zafiroglu, a distinguished expert in cultural anthropology and cybernetics.

Alexandra Zafiroglu, currently a Professor at the Australian National University, boasts a remarkable career. After earning her PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Brown University, Alex spent 15 impactful years at Intel Corporation. During her tenure at Intel, she made significant contributions to R&D and technology development across various divisions, earning 11 patents. Her role as Principal Engineer in Social Science within the Internet of Things Division solidified her as Intel’s foremost expert in homes and home life.

Now, Alex focuses on the critical role social scientists play in ensuring ethics, accountability, and data rights in the deployment of commercial cyber-physical systems. Her innovative approach to integrating social science with technology aligns perfectly with our research center’s mission.

Beyond her professional achievements, Alex is also known for her creative initiative as the „Chief Crocheting Officer,“ spreading the art of crochet by creating desktop-sized ‘co-workers’ during the Great Virtual Institute/Work From Home Experiment of 2020. This initiative highlights her commitment to community and well-being in the workplace.

The meeting between Orit, Jens, and Alex was marked by a vibrant exchange of ideas and a shared vision for the future. This encounter has sparked exciting possibilities for future collaborations, emphasizing the power of motivated teamwork and shared goals.

We look forward to the innovative projects that will emerge from this dynamic partnership. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to drive progress and shape a positive, transformative future together.
