On Friday, June 20, 2025, the Kulturpalast Dresden buzzed with excitement as the city’s annual Science Night unfolded, drawing over 1,100 visitors to the COSMO Science Forum. As the central meeting point for science enthusiasts, the Forum—jointly operated by the Barkhausen Institute and the Department Speculative Transformation as well as the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) —once again demonstrated its role as a catalyst for dialogue, discovery, and inspiration.

A Night Where Science Comes Alive

This year’s event, organized in collaboration with the Center for Open Digital Innovation and Participation (CODIP), and other partners, offered a rich and accessible program designed to bring research closer to the public. From 5 pm to 11 pm, the Kulturpalast foyer transformed into a vibrant space for hands-on science communication, with activities and discussions that invited visitors of all ages to engage, experiment, and wonder.

Highlights that Sparked Imagination

Among the evening’s standout features was the exhibition “[in]visible: Visualizations in Science,” which captivated audiences by revealing how complex scientific concepts can be made tangible through innovative visual storytelling. Interactive stations allowed guests to explore sustainable product ideas, step into immersive new learning environments via VR, and test their digital skills in dynamic settings.

Workshops proved especially popular, including sessions on connected medical technology, a Code & Play workshop for children and youth, and a thrilling drone demonstration where participants piloted virtual drones. Creative formats such as political speed dating encouraged playful yet meaningful exploration of pressing societal questions.

A Community United by Curiosity

The enthusiastic turnout and lively exchanges underscored the importance of direct engagement between science and society—particularly in an era when evidence-based knowledge and innovation are more vital and necessary than ever. The COSMO Science Forum once again affirmed its mission: to make science accessible, participatory, and relevant to everyone.

Looking Ahead

The Department Speculative Transformation and all partners extend heartfelt thanks to the visitors, collaborators, and dedicated team members who made this memorable night possible. We are already looking forward to the next Dresden Science Night, eager to continue building bridges between research and the wider community.

Stay curious—see you at the COSMO Science Forum!
